East Lake Golf Club (www.eastlakegolfclub.com) is the home course of legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and the TOUR Championship.
Established in 1904, East Lake is not only a historic golf club, but a philanthropic one. Golf club members have contributed more than $20 million to the revitalization of the East Lake neighborhood.
The property known as East Lake was purchased in 1904, and the golf course designed by Tom Bendelow opened July 4, 1908. In 1913, famed golf course architect Donald Ross redesigned the Bendelow course at East Lake. Ross also designed the "new" No. 2 course which opened in 1930. The club enjoyed another milestone in 1930 when Bobby Jones completed the Grand Slam of golf, winning the United States Amateur, United States Open, British Amateur, and British Open in the same year.
Over the years, East Lake has also given birth to 21 regional and 21 national golf champions and is the only American course in history to have produced two British Amateur champions: Bobby Jones in 1930 and Charlie Yates in 1938.
The Club’s Renovation Becomes the Neighborhood’s Revitalization
From the 1960s to the 1980s, the surrounding neighborhood deteriorated and became a center for poverty, drugs and violence. This all changed in 1993 when a local charitable foundation purchased East Lake to restore it as a tribute to Bobby Jones and the club's other great amateur golfers. By tying the club’s renovation to the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhood, the East Lake Foundation saved a precious piece of golf history and a community. Contributions from East Lake Golf Club’s member corporations as well as profits from the club operations support East Lake community programs.
East Lake Golf Club Today
In 1994, Rees Jones restored Donald Ross' golf course layout. Using the original Philip Shutze architectural drawings, the clubhouse was brought back to its 1926 design and condition. By 1995, East Lake had regained its place as one of the world's great golf clubs. Today, both East Lake Golf Club and the surrounding neighborhood continue to thrive.
